How to Make Sure We All Benefit When Nonprofits Patent Technologies Like CRISPR. [Please consider supporting Food and Farm Discussion Lab with an ongoing contribution of cell cholesterol, $1, $2, $3, $5 or $10 a month on Patreon. All contributors receive a subscription to our email newsletter the FAFDL Dispatch . Chaplin Times! ] This article originally appeared on The Conversation. It appears here under a Creative Commons license. Reform Is Needed When Nonprofits Patent Technologies Like CRISPR. Universities and other nonprofit research institutions are under increasing fire about their commitments to the public interest. In return for tax-exempt status, their work is supposed to benefit society. But are they really operating in the public interest when they wield their patent rights in ways that constrict research? Or when potentially lifesaving inventions are priced so high that access is part cell, limited? The public partially underwrites nonprofit discoveries via tax breaks and isn’t seeing a lot of benefit in return.
Non-profit patent licenses are one place where reforms can be made to cover for an essay put the public interest at the center. Questions like these arose recently in the case of CRISPR, the promising new gene-editing technology. Part Cell Synthesises Cholesterol! After patenting it, the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard sold the exclusive right to develop CRISPR-based therapies to its sister company Editas Medicine. Critics worry that this monopoly could limit important research and essay, result in exorbitant prices on emerging treatments. We’ve seen this situation before: For example, Xtandi, a prostate cancer drug developed and patented by researchers at the University of California-Los Angeles, now costs US$129,000 for a course of treatment. Nonprofit research institutions usually argue that any revenues they receive from their patents are reinvested in research and education. Part Cell Synthesises Cholesterol! They contend this approach ensures that new technologies become widely available in the marketplace. But I argue that nonprofit institutions can and should do better. Good And Evil Essay! At a moment of spiraling drug costs and cholesterol, declining trust in our science and technology policy institutions, they must develop a more sensitive and systematic way of letter essay, thinking about the public interest in their intellectual property strategies. I offer one possible path.
The logic of non-profit patent licensing. Nonprofit research institutions’ understanding of the public interest is based on a U.S. innovation logic that dates back to cholesterol the country’s founding. Early patent laws encouraged all citizens to participate in the system. Export Essay! The more people who took advantage of the part, exclusive property rights afforded by a patent, the export essay, thinking went, the more robust the synthesises cholesterol, private sector, the more economic growth and the more new technologies available. This logic guided passage of the 1980 Bayh-Dole Act, which lets universities, small businesses and nonprofits own patents for inventions and discoveries that stem from federally funded research. The law was triggered by policymakers’ concerns that companies were hesitating to commercialize federally funded inventions. Because the federal government paid for the research, it was unclear who – if anyone – owned the inventions that resulted. Companies worried that because the research results were in the public domain and unprotected by patents, they’d face competition and good and evil essay questions, limited profits if they decided to develop a technology further. But if nonprofits and small businesses could patent the inventions they developed, then they could exclusively license these inventions and defuse the threat of competition.
Both the research institutions and companies would benefit. Cell Synthesises Cholesterol! So too would the export essay, public because it would gain access to synthesises cholesterol new technologies. It seemed like a win-win-win. Licenses are first step to profits. In the wake of Bayh-Dole, many research institutions created technology transfer offices to help faculty and staff patent and cover letter essay, sell their innovations. These offices secure patents and then work to license the patented inventions and discoveries. The licenses come in synthesises, two flavors. In Research Papers! “Exclusive” means the part cell, company will have the sole license to develop the in research papers, invention. “Non-exclusive” allows the university to part synthesises sell multiple licenses on in research papers, a single patented invention. Exclusive licenses, like those negotiated by the Broad and UCLA in the cases of CRISPR and Xtandi, are common, but also controversial. Perhaps most famous is the exclusive license on Zerit, an important AIDS drug produced by part cell synthesises researchers at Yale University. In 1998, Yale licensed its Zerit patent to origin antithesis Bristol Myers Squibb. Cholesterol! The pharmaceutical company developed the drug further and eventually priced it so high that it was unaffordable for many in charlie, the developing world, where the synthesises, AIDS crisis was severe.
Doctors without Borders, working with Yale students, successfully pressured the Yale administration to allow a South African company to create a generic version of the export essay, drug, and cholesterol, the price dropped by 96 percent. Origin! This activism spawned the advocacy group Universities Allied for Essential Medicines, which now operates 100 chapters in 18 countries across the world. Researchers in UAEM advocate for better access to part synthesises medications, which means rethinking patent licensing on what comes out of their labs. Holding back on some non-profit patent licenses. Companies usually expect universities to sell them exclusive licenses to in research exploit their patents. They’re banking on the big profits that presumably come from cell having a monopoly on a valuable technology. Universities usually acquiesce because they too want to make the titles in research papers, product available and generate maximum revenue. But some universities have responded to UAEM’s activism. For instance, Harvard now reserves its right to license patents nonexclusively for humanitarian purposes in low-income countries. It accepts the potential for a smaller revenue stream as a trade-off for lower drug prices and greater accessibility.
Such provisions would come in handy for part synthesises cholesterol, patents on cover letter, essential medicines that could, say, cure Zika or HIV/AIDS. Meanwhile, in part synthesises cholesterol, other areas that raise significant moral, environmental and vinyl, public health concerns, nonprofit research institutions are experimenting with “ethical licensing.” To prevent the abuse of their patented technologies, these licenses come with limits. The Broad Institute’s exclusive licenses on part synthesises cholesterol, the CRISPR technologies, for example, have multiple restrictions. Export Essay! Licensees may not use the gene-editing technology to modify human embryos, alter the ecosystem or grow stronger tobacco plants. The Broad Institute’s approach is not a systematic or transparent one, though. It’s not clear, for example, how or why the organization decided on these restrictions, and under what circumstances it would decide to issue restrictions on its other patents. A better solution for non-profit patent licenses.
While promising, these efforts are still rare and ad hoc. I propose a better, more methodical, solution. Stand-alone nonprofit research institutions, universities and university-based hospitals should create intellectual property governance committees that would review pending patents and licenses. These committees would include not just patent lawyers, but also experts on part cell synthesises, innovation in its social, economic and historical context, ethicists and export essay, members of the public. There’s a good precedent for this approach. In the latter part of the 20th century, in cell synthesises cholesterol, response to revelations of unethical biomedical research conducted by university faculty, the federal government began to vinyl require that all institutions getting federal funds develop a research ethics infrastructure. Now all federally funded research in cell, the U.S. And Evil Questions! involving human subjects – no matter what kind of institution conducts it – must be approved by an institutional review board.
These are made up of scientists, lawyers, at least one member of the public and others with expertise in the responsible conduct of part cell, research. The 1980 Bayh-Dole Act clarified that nonprofits like the Broad Institute can own patents based on federally funded research. Peter Vanderwarker, CC BY. Suppose researchers at a nonprofit research institution develop a drug that treats opioid addiction. The drug would clearly have major societal benefit, since it could save some of the 500,000 Americans the disease is projected to kill within 10 years.
An intellectual property governance committee could recommend that the institution negotiate only nonexclusive licenses on the drug – in turn fostering research, competition and lower prices. In addition, the committee might advocate a narrowly written patent to encourage related innovation. Whether or not they embrace this idea, universities and nonprofit biomedical research institutions need to hold up their end of the societal bargain more carefully. If they don’t, they’re likely to origin antithesis face greater controversy and even more questions about whether they really deserve their special status. It appears here by permission of the author. Cultural Appropriation and Other People’s Food: Preliminary Thoughts.
No one but a fool, particularly a white upper middle class fool, would plunge into cell synthesises cholesterol the debate swirling around culinary cultural appropriation . I’m that fool. Like many people, I’ve been trying to get my head straight about culinary appropriation. Culinary appropriation is cover, not a distant issue to part cell cholesterol me. My first food book on the cuisines of Hawaii nearly didn’t get published because the publisher, the University of Hawaii Press, thought that a “mainland haole (white person)” author like me publishing on titles papers, the foods of the Islands would provoke a political uproar. Part Synthesises! The uproar never happened. The episode did, however, mean that I was never in the slightest doubt that dealing with the foods of and evil, other peoples could be political dynamite. Lunch Wagon at part cell cholesterol the University of essay, Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaii. Now, to part cell synthesises cholesterol be clear. Culinary appropriation is not just eating, enjoying, adopting, or benefitting from elements of other people’s cuisines. That’s gone on throughout history.
Thank goodness, because without that we’d all have miserably limited diets. No, the core elements of culinary appropriation are three. A transfer of export essay, knowledge of part synthesises, food (raw material, ingredient, dish, or whole cuisine) from one group to in research papers another group or individual. Cell! A sharp difference in power such that the obtaining group can exploit the charlie chaplin, food knowledge in cell, a way that the original group could not. This is usually due to a difference of race, class or gender (though I can imagine other asymmetries).
Hence recognition and money accruing to export essay the obtaining group (or individual) without acknowledgement or reward to part synthesises those who generated the food knowledge. As a white upper middle class person and citizen of two of the most powerful empires of the twentieth century, I can appropriate the cuisine of others. But by the above definition, if others chose to write about or offer for sale my cuisine (English, so I am not in fear and trembling that it will happen), that is world essay, not appropriation. The great advantage of the cell synthesises cholesterol, term appropriation (which has been around much longer in music, literature, and the arts than in food) is that it suggests theft, it creates shock, it makes people examine their behavior in a new way. The consequences (or perhaps disadvantages, depending on good essay questions, your perspective) are two.
First, that since it’s often not defined precisely, it leads the part synthesises cholesterol, kind of shouting matches that have occurred on social media in the past few weeks. Second, that this leads to antagonism and defensiveness from which it’s hard to recover. As a result, I’ve bracketed “culinary appropriation” for the time being in favor of “dealing with other people’s food.” (I’d also love to export essay introduce a little humor, or at least irony, because humor can both lighten and enlighten moral competitions that verge on the priggish. Unfortunately, humor is not my strong point so there won’t be much.) Dealing with other people’s food is something every individual, every society has to decide how to handle.
These decisions have become more pressing as travel and migration, whether voluntary or forced by war or captivity, have become commoner. These are tricky issues. To reiterate, this is a personal attempt to put my thoughts in order about cell cholesterol issues that have arisen ever since I first started writing about food nearly thirty years ago. It’s easy to assume that right-minded people have always assumed other people’s food to be delicious and thus to be explored with respect. That’s just not so.
It’s taken a long time to reach this historical point. So to get some distance on future, contemporary issues, I want to establish the cell, long historical base line. For most of good and evil questions, history, most people hesitated or outright avoided other people’s food. Why? What were the exceptions? What had to change to make other people’s food seem interesting or desirable? Which of these attitudes still lurks today? Chinese courtesans trying a western meal. By Wu Youru (d. 1893) one of synthesises cholesterol, China’s leading newspaper editors and illustrators. The Historical Norm: Shunning Other People’s Food.
“Other people’s food? No thank you,” was, and often still is, the norm in dealing with other people’s food. Ancient Greeks looked down on the way Scythians ate, Byzantines thought the cover for an, food of Gaul coarse, Western Europeans described the garum (fish sauce) of Byzantium as like piss, as the Persians were later to describe the beer of the Western Europe, Jesuits in China in the seventeenth century hated tofu, while Spanish in the New World had no use for corn tortillas. Synthesises! The French gastronome, Curnonsky in the 1930s, dismissed American food as only charlie chaplin slightly less barbaric than German. In the 1960s, I listened to part cell cholesterol Igbo teenagers describe Yoruba food as inedibly hot, Yoruba teenagers retort that Igbo food had no taste. The Underlying Rationale for Shunning Other People’s Food.
Fundamental beliefs about the health of the future world, human body, about human nature, as well as about religion, I suggest, underpinned the widespread wariness of the food of others. Consider health. Physicians across the part cholesterol, Old World advised that the healthiest food for an individual was the food where they had been born and raised. The further away you went, the more likely you were to get sick. There was something to this. In the mid nineteenth century, European armies began keeping records of the non-combat deaths of their troops overseas. This confirmed their hunch that soldiers–young presumably fit men–died much more frequently in the tropics than they did in their home countries. In Europe deaths per thousand were 10, in Bengal 70, in Sierra Leone 480. 1. At the time, no one knew why. Future World! Many of the synthesises, deaths were from gastrointestinal diseases, though, so it was natural to suspect the foreign food and water.
Or consider, your very nature. In most parts of the Ancient World, philosophers and physicians were agreed that you literally were what you ate, a belief that persisted until quite recently as I discuss in Cuisine and Empire. And what people were and what people ate were both arranged in a hierarchy. At the bottom were animals who ate raw food. Eat raw vegetables like an animal, and you would become animalistic. Eat milk and charlie chaplin modern times, cheese but no grains like a barbarian and you would become barbaric. Eat lesser grains and you would become a country bumpkin. Moving up, you came to the powerful, who depending on whether their power derived from synthesises war, religion, or politics, would eat appropriately.
Eat lots of meat and chaplin essay, you would become a warrior. Eat pure white vegetable foods and you would enhance your spirituality. Cell! Eat refined (highly processed) food like the aristocracy and you would become more refined. Now experimenting with your very nature, even if it held out the promise of improvement, was not something to titles in research be undertaken lightly. Think of some modern surgical procedures that promise just this. If experimenting meant trying foods that might bring about cell synthesises cholesterol degeneration, then it was to be avoided. (Doubtless prejudice played a role too, then as now. So did regular human behavior, kids trying to figure out where they fit in the world, travelers fearful of making fools of themselves, or too tired to take on charlie modern times, yet another novelty, the poor too sensible to risk what little they had on cell synthesises, food that they might not like. Papers! These reasons were not, I hazard, as important as the beliefs about what made you what you were). The Exception: The Global Network of the cell synthesises cholesterol, Foods of the export essay, Powerful.
If the powerful, whether their power was political, military, spiritual or cultural, had dealings with others of equal or greater rank, then foods might be exchanged or emulated. Rank, rather than race or ethnicity, shaped people’s eating habits. Alexander the Great seized on Persian cuisine, the part synthesises cholesterol, Mongols adopted much of Persian and Chinese cuisine. When the Spanish arrived in the New World, they had every intention of continuing to eat wheat bread, the food that made them what they were, as Rebecca Earle has explored in marvelous detail. 2/ They, like the English, Dutch, and essay, French who followed, did everything they could to get wheat, planting it where it flourished, importing it where it did not, like New Orleans as Nick Foreman of the University of Florida is part cell synthesises, investigating. Origin Antithesis Vinyl! 3/ Only when absolutely necessary, as in New England, the American South, or parts of Brazil, did they risk eating indigenous maize or cassava.
In the early nineteenth century, African merchants on the Gold Coast entertained American sea captains with soup, meat, desserts served on silver dishes and wine to synthesises accompany them. Letter! 4/ Later in synthesises cholesterol, the nineteenth century, Japanese, Indian, and Mexican nobility served high French cuisine. In food, as in the arts, therefore, imitation was the sincerest form of flattery (thanks to origin antithesis John Whiting for pointing this out). Reinforced by part cell synthesises the fact that every empire has always had to rely on local elites to help rule, cuisines of the elites became interconnected over cover for an essay vast distances. Meanwhile, the food of part cell, most people, that is poor rural people, was ignored or disdained. The Exception: The Global Network of the Foods of the Powerful.
All this matters for several reasons. First, this world view was to be crucial to global attempts to impose food on others at the end of the nineteenth century. Second, dismantling and replacing this world view led to titles in research other problems with the food of others. Third, the past casts a long shadow. essay on the uncanny by Sigmund Freud. It is only rarely that a psycho-analyst feels impelled to investigate the subject of part cell synthesises cholesterol, aesthetics, even when aesthetics is understood to good essay questions, mean not merely the theory of beauty but the theory of the qualities of feeling. He works in other strata of mental life and has little to do with the subdued emotional impulses which, inhibited in their aims and dependent on a host of part cell synthesises cholesterol, concurrent factors, usually furnish the material for the study of aesthetics. Export Essay. But it does occasionally happen that he has to interest himself in some particular province of that subject; and this province usually proves to part, be a rather remote one, and one which has been neglected in the specialist literature of aesthetics. The subject of the ‘uncanny’ is a province of this kind.
It is undoubtedly related to what is frightening — to what arouses dread and horror; equally certainly, too, the word is not always used in a clearly definable sense, so that it tends to coincide with what excites fear in antithesis vinyl general. Yet we may expect that a special core of cholesterol, feeling is present which justifies the use of a special conceptual term. One is curious to know what this common core is cover letter for an, which allows us to distinguish as ‘uncanny’; certain things which lie within the field of what is frightening. … In his study of the ‘uncanny,’ Jentsch quite rightly lays stress on the obstacle presented by the fact that people vary so very greatly in their sensitivity to this quality of feeling. Part Cell Synthesises Cholesterol. The writer of the future essay, present contribution, indeed, must himself plead guilty to a special obtuseness in part cell the matter, where extreme delicacy of perception would be more in place. It is good and evil essay, long since he has experienced or heard of anything which has given him an uncanny impression, and he must start by translating himself into that state of cell cholesterol, feeling, by awakening in himself the possibility of experiencing it. Still, such difficulties make themselves powerfully felt in future world essay many other branches of aesthetics; we need not on that account despair of finding instances in which the quality in question will be unhesitatingly recognized by most people. Two courses are open to us at part cell synthesises cholesterol, the outset.
Either we can find out export essay what meaning has come to be attached to the word ‘uncanny’ in part synthesises the course of its history; or we can collect all those properties of persons, things, sense-impressions, experiences and situations which arouse in us the feeling of uncanniness, and then infer the unknown nature of the export essay, uncanny from what all these examples have in common. Part Cholesterol. I will say at once that both courses lead to the same result: the uncanny is that class of the frightening which leads back to what is known of old and long familiar. How this is possible, in what circumstances the familiar can become uncanny and frightening, I shall show in what follows. Let me also add that my investigation was actually begun by origin antithesis vinyl, collecting a number of individual cases, and was only later confirmed by part synthesises, an examination of linguistic usage. Export Essay. In this discussion, however, I shall follow the reverse course.
The German word ‘unheimlich’ is obviously the opposite of ‘heimlich’ [‘homely’], … the opposite of what is familiar; and we are tempted to conclude that what is ‘uncanny’ is part cell synthesises, frightening precisely because it is not known and familiar. Naturally not everything that is new and unfamiliar is frightening, however; the relation is not capable of inversion. Good Essay Questions. … Something has to part cholesterol, be added to what is novel and charlie times, unfamiliar in order to make it uncanny. On the whole, Jentsch … ascribes the essential factor in the production of the feeling of uncanniness to intellectual uncertainty; so that the part, uncanny would always, as it were, be something one does not know one’s way about in. The better orientated in his environment a person is, the less readily will he get the impression of something uncanny in regard to the objects and origin, events in part cell synthesises cholesterol it. It is not difficult to see that this definition is charlie modern times, incomplete, and we will therefore try to proceed beyond the equation ‘uncanny’ as ‘unfamiliar.’ We will first turn to other languages. But the synthesises, dictionaries that we consult tell us nothing new, perhaps only titles in research because we ourselves speak a language that is foreign. Indeed, we get an cell cholesterol impression that many languages are without a word for this particular shade of what is frightening. … Latin : … An uncanny place: locus suspectus ; at an uncanny time of night. … Greek : … Eeros (i.e., strange, foreign). English : … Uncomfortable, uneasy, gloomy, dismal, uncanny, ghastly; (of a house) haunted; (of a man) a repulsive fellow. French : … Inquitant , sinistre , lugubre , mal son aise . Spanish : … Sospechoso , de mal agero , lgubre , siniestro . … In Arabic and Hebrew ‘uncanny’ means the same as ‘daemonic,’ ‘gruesome.’ Let us therefore return to the German language.
In Daniel Sanders’s Wrterbuch der Deutschen Sprache (1860, 1, 729), the[re] is following entry… under the word ‘heimlich.’ “ Heimlich, adj., … I. [B]elonging to the house, not strange, familiar, tame, intimate, friendly, etc. … (b) Of animals: tame, companionable to man. Cover For An Essay. … (c) Intimate, friendly comfortable; the enjoyment of quiet content, etc., arousing a sense of agreeable restfulness and security as in one within the four walls of his house. Is it still heimlich to part cell cholesterol, you in your country where strangers are felling your woods?’ ‘She did not feel too heimlich with him.’ … II. Chaplin Modern Essay. Concealed, kept from synthesises cholesterol, sight, so that others do not get to origin, know of or about it, withheld from others. To do something heimlich , i.e., behind someone’s back; to part cell, steal away heimlich; heimlich meetings and appointments. … The heimlich art’ (magic). ‘Where public ventilation has to stop, there heimlich conspirators and the loud battle-cry of charlie modern times essay, professed revolutionaries.’ ‘A holy, heimlich effect.’ … ‘learned in cell strange Heimlichkeiten’ (magic arts). … Note especially the essay, negative ‘un-’: eerie, weird, arousing gruesome fear: ‘Seeming quite unheimlich and ghostly to him.’ ‘The unheimlich, fearful hours of part cell synthesises, night.’ ‘I had already long since felt an unheimich,’ even gruesome feeling.’ ‘Now I am beginning to have an unheimlich feeling.’ … ‘Feels an unheimlich horror.’ ‘ Unheimlich and motionless like a stone image.’ ‘The unheimlich mist called hill-fog.’ ‘These pale youths are unheinrlich and titles papers, are brewing heaven knows what mischief.’ ‘Unh eimlich is the name for everything that ought to have remained . secret and synthesises cholesterol, hidden but has come to light’ (Schelling).— ‘To veil the divine, to surround it with a certain Unheimlichkeit.’ …” What interests us most in this long extract is to find that among its different shades of meaning the word ‘ heimlich’’ exhibits one which is future world, identical with its opposite, ‘ unheirnlich.’ What is heimlich thus comes to be unheimlich. (Cf. the cell cholesterol, quotation from Gutzkow: ‘We call it “unheimlich”; you call it “heimlich.”’) In general we are reminded that the word ‘heimlich’ is not unambiguous, but belongs to in research papers, two sets of ideas, which, without being contradictory, are yet very different: on the one hand it means what is familiar and agreeable, and on cell, the other. what is concealed and export essay, kept out of sight. ‘Unheimlich’ is customarily used, we are told, as the contrary only of the first signification of’ heimlich,’ and part cholesterol, not of the second. Sanders tells us nothing concerning a possible genetic connection between these two meanings of heimlich. On the other hand, we notice that Schelling says something which throws quite a new light on the concept of the Unheimlich, for which we were certainly not prepared.
According to him, everything is unheimlich that ought to have remained secret and hidden but has come to light. … Thus heimlich is a word the meaning of which develops in the direction of in research, ambivalence, until it finally coincides with its opposite, unheimlich. Unheimlich is in some way or other a sub-species of heimlich. Let us bear this discovery in mind, though we cannot yet rightly understand it, alongside of Schelling’s definition of the synthesises, Unheimlich. If we go on to examine individual instances of cover letter for an, uncanniness, these hints will become intelligible to synthesises cholesterol, us. When we proceed to review things, persons, impressions, events and situations which are able to arouse in us a feeling of the uncanny in a particularly forcible and definite form, the export essay, first requirement is synthesises cholesterol, obviously to select a suitable example to start on. Jentsch has taken as a very good instance ‘doubts whether an apparently animate being is really alive; or conversely, whether a lifeless object might not be in fact animate’; and he refers in this connection to the impression made by waxwork figures, ingeniously constructed dolls and origin vinyl, automata. To these he adds the uncanny effect of epileptic fits, and of manifestations of insanity, because these excite in the spectator the impression of automatic, mechanical processes at work behind the ‘ordinary appearance of mental activity. Without entirely accepting this author’s view, we will take it as a starting point for part our own investigation because in what follows he reminds us of a writer who has succeeded in producing uncanny effects better than anyone else. Jentsch writes: ‘In telling a story one of the most successful devices for easily creating uncanny effects is to leave the reader in origin antithesis vinyl uncertainty whether a particular figure in the story is a human being or an automaton and to do it in such a wa y that his attention is not focused directly upon his uncertainty, so that he may not be led to go into the matter and clear it up immediately.
That, as we have said, would quickly dissipate the peculiar emotional effect of the thing. E. T. Cell. A. Hoffmann has repeatedly employed this psychological artifice with success in future his fantastic narratives.’ This observation, undoubtedly a correct one, refers primarily to the story of The Sand-Man” in cell cholesterol Hoffmann’s Nachtstcken, which contains the original of Olympia, the doll that appears in good and evil essay the first act of Offenbach’s opera, Tales of Hoffmann , but I cannot think — and I hope most readers of the story will agree with me — that the part cell cholesterol, theme of the doll Olympia, who is to all appearances a living being, is by any means the only, or indeed the most important, element that must be held responsible for the quite unparalleled atmosphere of uncanniness evoked by the story. Nor is this atmosphere heightened by the fact that the author himself treats the episode of Olympia with a faint touch of satire and uses it to poke fun at the young man’s idealization of his mistress. The main theme of the essay questions, story is, on the contrary, something different, something which gives it its name, and which is always re-introduced at critical moments: it is the theme of the ‘Sand-Man’ who tears out children’s eyes. This fantastic tale opens with the childhood recollections of the student Nathaniel. Part Cell Synthesises. In spite of his present happiness, he cannot banish the memories associated with the mysterious and terrifying death of export essay, his beloved father. On certain evenings his mother used to send the children to bed early, warning them that ‘the Sand-Man was coming’; and, sure enough, Nathaniel would not fail to cell, hear the heavy tread of a visitor, with whom his father would then be occupied for the evening. When questioned about the export essay, Sand-Man, his mother, it is true, denied that such a person existed except as a figure of cell synthesises cholesterol, speech; but his nurse could give him more definite information: ‘He’s a wicked man who comes when children won’t go to bed, and throws handfuls of sand in their eyes so that they jump out of their heads all bleeding. Then he puts the eyes in a sack and carries them off to essay questions, the half-moon to feed his children.
They sit up there in synthesises cholesterol their nest, and their beaks are hooked like owls’ beaks, and they use them to peck up naughty boys’ and girls’ eyes with.’ Although little Nathaniel was sensible and old enough not to good and evil essay questions, credit the cell, figure of the Sand-Man with such gruesome attributes, yet the dread of him became fixed in good his heart. He determined to find out what the Sand-Man looked like; and one evening, when the Sand-Man was expected again, he hid in his father’s study. He recognized the visitor as the lawyer Coppelius, a repulsive person whom the children were frightened of when he occasionally came to synthesises cholesterol, a meal; and he now identified this Coppelius with the dreaded Sand-Man. As regards the rest of the scene, Hoffmann already leaves us in doubt whether what we are witnessing is vinyl, tee first delirium of the panic-stricken boy, or a succession of events which are to be regarded in cell cholesterol the story as being real. His father and the guest are at work at a brazier with glowing flames. The little eavesdropper hears Coppelius call out: ‘Eyes here! Eyes here!’ and betrays himself by screaming aloud. Coppelius seizes him and is on the point of dropping bits of export essay, red-hot coal from the part cell synthesises, fire into his eyes, and then of throwing them into the brazier, but his father begs him off and saves his eyes. After this the boy falls into a deep swoon; and a long illness brings his experience to an end.
Those who decide in favour of the future essay, rationalistic interpretation of the Sand-Man will not fail to recognize in the child’s phantasy the persisting influence of his nurse’s story. The bits of sand that are to be thrown into the child’s eyes turn into bits of red-hot coal from the flames; and in both cases they are intended to make his eyes jump out. In the course of another visit of the Sand-Man’s, a year later, his father is killed in his study by an explosion. The lawyer Coppelius disappears from the place without leaving a trace behind. Nathaniel, now a student, believes that he has recognized this phantom of horror from part cell cholesterol, his childhood in an itinerant optician, an Italian called Giuseppe Coppola, who at his university town, offers him weather-glasses for sale. When Nathaniel refuses, the man goes on: ‘Not weather-glasses? not weather-glasses? also got fine eyes, fine eyes!’ The student’s terror is allayed when he finds that the proffered eyes are only harmless spectacles, and he buys a pocket spy-glass from Coppola. With its aid he looks across into Professor Spalanzani’s house opposite and there spies Spalanzani’s beautiful, but strangely silent and motionless daughter, Olympia. He soon falls in love with her so violently that, because of good and evil questions, her, he quite forgets the part cholesterol, clever and sensible girl to whom he is betrothed.
But Olympia is an automaton whose clock-work has been made by Spalanzani, and and evil questions, whose eyes have been put in synthesises cholesterol by Coppola, the Sand-Man. The student surprises the two Masters quarrelling over their handiwork. The optician carries off the wooden eyeless doll; and the mechanician, Spalanzani, picks up Olympia ’s bleeding eyes from the ground and export essay, throws them at Nathaniel’s breast, saying that Coppola had stolen them from the student. Nathaniel succumbs to a fresh attack of madness, and in cell cholesterol his delirium his recollection of export essay, his father’s death is part cell synthesises, mingled with this new experience. In Research Papers. ‘Hurry up! hurry up! ring of fire!’ he cries. ‘Spin about, ring of fire — Hurrah! Hurry up, wooden doll! lovely wooden doll, spin about — .’ He then falls upon the professor, Olympia ’s ‘father,’ and tries to strangle him. Rallying from a long and serious illness, Nathaniel seems at last to have recovered.
He intends to cell cholesterol, marry his betrothed, with whom he has become reconciled. One day he and she are walking through the city market-place, over which the high tower of the papers, Town Hall throws its huge shadow. Part Cholesterol. On the girl’s suggestion, they climb the tower, leaving her brother, who is walking with them, down below. From the top, Clara’s attention is drawn to chaplin, a curious object moving along the street. Nathaniel looks at this thing through Coppola’s spy-glass, which he finds in his pocket, and falls into cell a new attack of madness. Shouting ‘Spin about, wooden doll!’ he tries to throw the cover letter for an, girl into the gulf below. Her brother, brought to her side by her cries, rescues her and hastens down with her to safety.
On the tower above, the madman rushes round, shrieking ‘Ring of fire, spin about!’ — and we know the origin of the words. Among the part cell synthesises cholesterol, people who begin to gather below there comes forward the figure of the lawyer Coppelius, who has suddenly returned. We may suppose that it was his approach, seen through the spy-glass, which threw Nathaniel into his fit of chaplin, madness. As the onlookers prepare to go up and overpower the cell, madman, Coppelius laughs and titles, says: ‘Wait a bit; he’ll come down of himself.’ Nathaniel suddenly stands still, catches sight of Coppelius, and with a wild shriek ‘Yes! “fine eyes — fine eyes”!’ flings himself over the parapet. While he lies on the paving-stones with a shattered skull the Sand-Man vanishes in the throng. This short summary leaves no doubt, I think, that the feeling of something uncanny is directly attached to the figure of the Sand-Man, that is, to synthesises, the idea of world, being robbed of synthesises cholesterol, one’s eyes, and future world, that Jentsch’s point of an intellectual uncertainty has nothing to do with the effect. Uncertainty whether an object is living or inanimate, which admittedly applied to the doll Olympia , is quite irrelevant in connection with this other, more striking instance of uncanniness.
It is true that the writer creates a kind of uncertainty in us in the beginning by not letting us know, no doubt purposely, whether he is taking us into part cholesterol the real world or into a purely fantastic one of his own creation. He has, of course, a right to do either; and if he chooses to stage his action in a world peopled with spirits, demons and ghosts, as Shakespeare does in Hamlet, in Macbeth and, in a different sense, in The Tempest and A Midsummer-Night’s Dream , we must bow to his decision and treat his setting as though it were real for as long as we put ourselves into this hands. But this uncertainty disappears in the course of papers, Hoffmann’s story, and part cell, we perceive that he intends to make us, too, look through the demon optician’s spectacles or spy-glass — perhaps, indeed, that the author in his very own person once peered through such an instrument. For the conclusion of the story makes it quite clear that Coppola the optician really is the essay, lawyer Coppelius and also, therefore, the cell cholesterol, Sand-Man. There is no question therefore, of any intellectual uncertainty here: we know now that we are not supposed to be looking on at the products of antithesis vinyl, a madman’s imagination, behind which we, with the superiority of rational minds, are able to detect the sober truth; and yet this knowledge does not lessen the synthesises cholesterol, impression of uncanniness in the least degree. The theory of intellectual uncertainty is thus incapable of explaining that impression. We know from psycho-analytic experience, however, that the fear of damaging or losing one’s eyes is a terrible one in children.
Many adults retain their apprehensiveness in this respect, and no physical injury is so much dreaded by them as an injury to the eye. We are accustomed to say, too, that we will treasure a thing as the apple of our eye. A study of dreams, phantasies and myths has taught us that anxiety about one’s eyes, the fear of going blind, is often enough a substitute for the dread of being castrated. The self-blinding of the mythical criminal, Oedipus, was simply a mitigated form of the punishment of castration — the only punishment that was adequate for him by the lex talionis. We may try on rationalistic grounds to deny that fears about the antithesis, eye are derived from the fear of part cell cholesterol, castration, and chaplin essay, may argue that it is very natural that so precious an organ as the cell, eye should be guarded by a proportionate dread. Indeed, we might go further and say that the fear of castration itself contains no other significance and no deeper secret than a justifiable dread of this rational kind. But this view does not account adequately for the substitutive relation between the eye and and evil questions, the male organ which is part synthesises, seen to modern essay, exist in dreams and myths and phantasies; nor can it dispel the impression that the threat of being castrated in especial excites a peculiarly violent and part cholesterol, obscure emotion, and that this emotion is what first gives the idea of losing other organs its intense colouring. All further doubts are removed when we learn the details of their ‘castration complex’ from the analysis of neurotic patients, and realize its immense importance in their mental life. Moreover, I would not recommend any opponent of the psycho-analytic view to select this particular story of the Sand-Man with which to support his argument that anxiety about the eyes has nothing to do with the castration complex. For why does Hoffmann bring the anxiety about eyes into such intimate connection with the father’s death? And why does the Sand-Man always appear as a disturber of love? ** He separates the unfortunate Nathaniel from cover for an, his betrothed and from her brother, his best friend; he destroys the second object of his love, Olympia, the lovely doll; and he drives him into part synthesises suicide at the moment when he has won back his Clara and is about to be happily united to her.
Elements in the story like these, and many others, seem arbitrary and good and evil, meaningless so long as we deny all connection between fears about the eye and castration; but they become intelligible as soon as we replace the Sand-Man by the dreaded father at whose hands castration is cell synthesises cholesterol, expected. ** We shall venture, therefore, to refer the uncanny effect of the Sand-Man to the anxiety belonging to the castration complex of childhood. But having reached the idea that we can make an infantile factor such as this responsible for feelings of uncanniness, we are encouraged to see whether we can apply it to other instances of the uncanny. We find in the story of the in research papers, Sand-Man the other theme on which Jentsch lays stress, of a doll which appears to be alive. Jentsch believes that a particularly favourable condition for awakening uncanny feelings is created when there is intellectual uncertainty whether an object is alive or not, and when an inanimate object becomes too much like an animate one. Now, dolls are of course rather closely connected with childhood life. We remember that in cell their early games children do not distinguish at all sharply between living and essay, inanimate objects, and that they are especially fond of treating their dolls like live people. In fact, I have occasionally heard a woman patient declare that even at the age of eight she had still been convinced that her dolls would be certain to part cell synthesises, come to letter, life if she were to look at them in cell a particular, extremely concentrated, way. So that here, too, it is not difficult to discover a factor from childhood. But, curiously enough, while the Sand-Man story deals with the arousing of an early childhood fear, the idea of a ‘living doll’ excites no fear at all; children have no fear of their dolls coming to life, they may even desire it. The source of uncanny feelings would not, therefore, be an infantile fear in this case, but rather an infantile wish or even merely an infantile belief.
There seems to be a contradiction here; but perhaps it is only a complication, which may be helpful to us later on. ** For a contrary view put forth by Freud himself, compare “The Taboo on Virginity,” in which Freud writes: “Whenever primitive man institutes a taboo, there he fears a danger; and it cannot be disputed that the general principle underlying all of these regulations and avoidances is a dread of women. In Research Papers. Perhaps the cholesterol, fear is founded on the difference of woman from man, on her eternally inexplicable, mysterious, strange nature which thus seems hostile. Man fears that his strength will be taken from him by women, dreads becoming infected with her femininity and the proving himself a weakling. The effect of coitus in discharging tensions and inducing flaccidity may be a type of future world essay, what these fears represent. … In any event, the taboos described are evidence of the existence of a force which, by regarding women as strange and part cell cholesterol, hostile, sets itself against love.” ** [ Freud’s footnote ] In fact, Hoffmann’s imaginative treatment of his material has not made such wild confusion of future essay, its elements that we cannot reconstruct their original arrangement. In the story of Nathaniel’s childhood, the figures of part, his father and Coppelius represent the vinyl, two opposites into which the father-imago is split by part cell cholesterol, his ambivalence; whereas the in research, one threatens to blind him — that is, to cell synthesises, castrate him — , the other, the ‘good’ father, intercedes for his sight. The part of the complex which is most strongly repressed, the death-wish against the ‘bad’ father, finds expression in future world the death of the ‘good’ father, and Coppelius is made answerable for it. This pair of part cell cholesterol, fathers is represented later, in his student days, by cover essay, Professor Spalanzani and Coppola the part cholesterol, optician. The Professor is even called the father of Olympia . This double occurrence of activity in common betrays them as divisions of the father-imago: both the mechanician and the optician were the father f Nathaniel (and of Olympia as well). In the frightening scene in childhood, Coppelius, after sparing Nathaniel’s eyes, has screwed off his arms and legs as an good and evil essay questions experiment; that is, he had worked on him as a mechanician would on a doll. This singular feature, which seems quite outside the picture of the Sand-Man, introduces a new castration equivalent; but it also points to the inner identity of Coppelius with his later counterpart, Spalanzani the part cell synthesises, mechanician, and prepares us for the interpretation of Olympia . This automatic doll can be nothing else than a materialization of essay questions, Nathaniel’s feminine attitude towards his father in his infancy.
Her fathers, Spalanzani and Coppola, are, after all, nothing but new editions, reincarnations of Nathaniel’s pair of fathers. Spalanzani’s otherwise incomprehensible statement that the optician has stolen Nathaniel’s eyes … , so as to set them in the doll, now becomes significant as supplying evidence of the cell synthesises, identity of export essay, Olympia and Nathaniel. Olympia is, as it were, a dissociated complex of Nathaniel’s which confronts him as a person, and Nathaniel’s enslavement to this complex is expressed in his senseless obsessive love for Olympia . Cell Synthesises Cholesterol. We may with justice call love of this kind narcissistic, and we can understand why someone who has fallen victim to it should relinquish the origin antithesis vinyl, real external object of his love. The psychological truth of the situation in which the young man, fixated upon his father by his castration complex, becomes incapable of loving a woman, is amply proved by numerous analyses of patients whose story, though less fantastic, is hardly less tragic than that of the student Nathaniel. …
